Excited to help another gay couple reach their American Dream!
I’ve been working with immigrants for the past 24 years of my life, in the past 5 years as an attorney, and in these 24 years, on many occasions I had to tell LGBT clients that the law did not permit LGBTs to apply for permanent residency for a spouse or significant other…. Of course this all changed when the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA.
I was very excited this week to have represented a gay couple before the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Service in obtaining lawful permanent residency for the foreign national gay spouse.
When the clients first contacted me, DOMA had just been knocked down by the Supreme Court, and the clients were not aware that the U.S. citizen LGBT spouses could now petition for their foreign national LGBT spouse. I think at first the clients thought I was not being honest with them and that I was advising them to do something that would not be approved. But this week, it was invigorating for me to see the look on their faces when the officer told them that their petition was being approved.
Gonzalez Law Offices has successfully represented other gay clients successfully, but this was my first time before the Immigration Service, and preparing the clients for their interview for adjustment of status. It was exhilarating for me to go before the officer with my clients and having the clients tell the officer their love story and why they deserve that lawful permanent residence be granted to the gay foreign national spouse. There is no other greater feeling than helping clients who are only looking to make a life together like so many others couple.
I love my work!!!
